History of Kernersville

The area that is known as Kernersville today was first settled in 1756 by an Irishman named Jacob Story. However, the land was purchased in 1770 by a man known as William Dobson who named the site Dobson's Crossroads. Mainly, Dobson's Crossroads was a small rural town with a tavern, a bank, a country store and a few other small businesses.

When Joseph Kerner purchased the town in 1817, he changed its name to Kerners Crossroads. Several more businesses found their homes in the town, and in 1873, it became incorporated as Kernersville.
